There are several theories about what makes Jewish people so funny, particularly by Freud, who took a keen interest in jokes and what they represent in the unconscious. According to him, not only were Jewish people the most entertaining, but they were also the most interesting to observe.

Back in the ’50s and ’60s, during the ripest age of stand-up, Lenny Bruce emerged as one of the pioneers of social satire. However, he bore the brunt of being one of the leading men of this movement because he was often taken to court or jailed for obscene. Despite his many run-ins with the law, he was held in high esteem by artists and intellectuals alike and has maintained his position as an icon for free speech.

Jerry Seinfeld

Seinfeld may have aired more than twenty years ago, but the stand-up comic still makes over $20 million on his tours. He is also an actor, writer, and producer and laid the groundwork for sitcoms in the nineties with his partially fictionalized show based on his persona. His show and most of his stand-up is ripe with observational comedy.

Modi Rosenfeld

You may have heard of this New York based stand-up comic who hails from Israel. He has an interesting academic background— he majored in Psychology at Boston University. He made even more interesting career choices and has served as both a cantor at a synagogue and a banker on Wall Street. Now he has blessed the world of comedy, and like many other Jewish comedians, his content centers largely around his religious and nationalist identity.
